INSPIRING STORY OF ELIJAH MAINGI AKA LUCKY BOY'S JOURNEY: FROM TIBS COLLEGE LECTURE HALLS TO ROYAL MEDIA TV PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT

When you meet Elijah Maingi, popularly known as Luckyboy, you quickly realize that he is more than just a journalist—he is a storyteller, a creative mind, and a voice shaping Kenya’s media landscape. At his young age, Luckyboy has already carved a unique path in the world of television, radio, print, and digital platforms, proving that passion, determination, and versatility can open doors in even the most competitive industries.

Born and raised in Mwingi, Kitui County, Luckyboy’s journey into media began with a natural curiosity and a love for storytelling. At Syungii Secondary School, he was not only active in academics but also threw himself into extracurricular activities, from debate to environmental leadership. He also made his mark at the Kenya Science and Engineering Fair, showcasing an early knack for research and presentation—skills that would later define his career in journalism.

After completing his secondary education, he enrolled at Thika Institute of Business Studies (TIBS), where he pursued a diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication. It was here that Luckyboy sharpened his skills in radio presentation, TV directing and producing, and media writing. His drive saw him not only study but also actively practice journalism while still in college — co-producing radio shows, hosting political and newspaper review programs, and contributing articles to TIBS Weekly and the annual college magazine. Thanks to TIBS College, which secured him an internship opportunity at Royal Media Services, Luckyboy was able to put his training into practice at a national level. This invaluable exposure culminated in him securing employment at the same company after his internship, a true testament to how TIBS College connects its students to real career opportunities.

Versatility Behind the Camera

Today, Luckyboy works with Royal Media Services (RMS), Kenya’s largest media house, as a TV Director, Producer, and Autocue Operator. His role as a producer for Kenya’s Gold Show demands a rare mix of creativity, leadership, and technical expertise. From conceptualizing program ideas to managing budgets, supervising production teams, and ensuring seamless live broadcasts, Luckyboy has mastered the art of multitasking in a high-pressure environment.

“Directing live TV is like conducting an orchestra,” he explains. “You have to bring everyone—cameramen, sound engineers, lighting experts, presenters—into harmony so the audience gets the perfect show.”

His behind-the-scenes role as an autocue operator might seem technical, but it is crucial in ensuring presenters deliver news and shows with confidence. “It’s all about timing,” he notes. “If you scroll too fast or too slow, you throw the whole broadcast off balance. You have to be calm even under pressure.”

Voice on Air and Pen on Paper

But Luckyboy’s talent doesn’t end in television. His voice has graced radio waves too, from volunteering as a radio producer and presenter at Glorious FM in the year 2021, where he hosted shows like Club Saturday Express and Glorious Drive Show.

Beyond broadcast, he was a writer for Mt. Kenya Times newspaper, where for over three years he contributed engaging news and feature articles. Writing, for him, is not just a job—it is a way to influence society. “The pen is still powerful,” he reflects. “Through articles, we can educate, inspire, and spark change.”

The Digital Edge

In a rapidly changing media industry, Maingi has also embraced the digital shift. His stint as a digital marketing strategist and graphic designer at Kismet International College and Elisa Travel Agency gave him new tools to merge journalism with digital influence. He successfully managed social media accounts, designed promotional content, and implemented SEO-driven strategies—skills that make him stand out in today’s converged media space.

He has also earned certificates in Digital Journalism sponsored by Reuters and SEO strategy, and digital marketing tools sponsored by Royal Media Services, proof of his commitment to constant learning.

The Road Ahead

For someone who has already achieved so much at a young age, what lies ahead for Luckyboy? His dream is to continue growing as a media producer, TV director and storyteller, eventually creating programs that not only entertain but also shape conversations in Kenya and beyond.

“I want to tell stories that matter—stories that empower young people, give communities a voice, and show the real Kenya,” he says passionately.

Away from work, Luckyboy enjoys adventure, and of course, keeping up with the latest news. His hobbies reflect his personality: curious, outgoing, and deeply connected to society.

In an industry that demands resilience, adaptability, and creativity, Luckyboy Maingi has shown that he is built for the long haul. From radio studios in Thika to directing prime-time television in Nairobi, his journey is proof that with passion and persistence, dreams do come true.
